“To say that reading Adventures of PR Man is sheer delight is an under-statement. I have gone through the pages of this work again and again to discover not Mr. Surkund, it author, but the world of the Indian Middleclass in which I was born, to savor all its hopes, ambitions and fears.” States Mr. M. V. Kamath, a veteran journalist of international repute and current Chairman of Prasar Bharati in his foreword, for book ‘Ad-ventures of PR Man’.
Mr. S. N. Surkund, the author of the book, writes about the simple unsophisticated joy of just being human. I know of no other writer who can write so vibrantly of boyhood memoirs of small towns and little villages, of little acts of love and affection with élan. In most of the sense the book in its style reminds of Late R. K. Narayan’ Malgudi Days. Should it be distinct than the either, it’s about fiction and fact. While Malgudi days is more of fiction, Surkund’ book is more based upon facts.
Though the books resembles as if it is for people hailing from PR, the book has also been greatly applauded by people from all walks of life. The books depicts things like: “What is it to be born and brought up in a small town, to be anointed with values and to live in high expectations of making it in the big bad world? How does one feel to take one’ first train ride, to encounter the complexities of a city, to travel round the country and meet people from different walks of life? And, finally, what is it to be a Public Relations Man in a major bank and what problems wait to be solves?
Besides it subtle humor, the book also depicts the great capacity of the author not just to laugh at world but also at himself. The genius of turning minor incident into a major event, worthy of the attention of the unsuspecting reader is greatly present in the book.
Though it can be consider as a ‘Must Read’ for the professionals from Advertising, Managerial and Media related professions and even students of trade. People who live in a monotonous and commercial world will indeed be glued to it.
As a critic I have little bothered in life about the biographies, as most of them are self-centric with little interests. This book however was truly joyous. Once in my hand I could put it down only after had read it completely. Plainly, the book is just unstoppable once you start reading it.
